How Team USA Came Back to Win the Presidents Cup
Down 10.5 to 7.5 going into Sunday at Medinah, Team USA won the singles 9.5 to 2.5 and took the Presidents Cup 17 to 13.
Team USA walked into Sunday at Medinah Country Club trailing 10.5 to 7.5, a historic lead for the International Team. By the end of the afternoon the Americans had won the singles session 9.5 to 2.5, a record margin for a Presidents Cup Sunday, and taken the Cup 17 to 13.
How the week went
- Thursday: Team USA won the opening four-ball session 3 to 2.
- Friday: the International Team swept the foursomes 5 to 0 and moved ahead 7 to 3.
- Saturday: the Internationals held on through two more sessions and led 10.5 to 7.5 going into Sunday.
- Sunday: Team USA won the singles 9.5 to 2.5 for a 17 to 13 win, the 11th straight Presidents Cup for the United States.
Brandt Snedeker's team had trailed since Friday and still found a way. That Sunday is the part of this Presidents Cup people will keep talking about.
What a tour Sunday looks like for the gear
Watch any caddie at an event like this and you will see the towel come out after nearly every shot. Faces and grooves get wiped and grips stay dry. None of it is glamorous, and all of it is there so the player can trust the club in their hands when the match is on the line.
- Wipe the face and grooves after every shot. Dirt packed into the grooves takes spin off your wedges.
- Keep a dry towel just for the grips. A damp or grimy grip is the first thing to go when the pressure is on.
- Clean everything properly after the round, not next weekend. Dried mud and grass are harder to lift the longer they sit.
